Samar Island is the 3rd largest island of the Philippines and one of the 200 Eco-Regions in the world vital to preserving the Earth's biodiveristy; one of the biggest limestone formation in the country; one of the 9 endemic bird areas in the philippines with 197 species of birds (34% of all RP bird species); 39 species of mammals (23% of total in the country); 25 species of reptiles and 12 amphibians; a historical landmark of the framed Balangiga encounter on September 28, 1901.


Calbayog City - situated in the western part of the Island of Samar, facing Samar Sea, is a haven of natural attractions: towering and cascading waterfalls reason why it is dubbed as 'City of Waterfalls' (7 falls in the brochure); caves and rock formation in Biri Island (RP version of the Grand Canyon i was told); beaches and a hot spring named 'mapaso hot spring' with consistency of a boiling  water and healing value of its waters; a marble park and forest ideal for mountaineering, trekking, housing caves underneath preserved for over a hundred years. Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul is the biggest church in the province of Samar - has lots of Spanish blended with modern touches in architecture - 5  minutes away from Ciriaco Hotel (I attended mass there last Sunday for the feast of Sto. Nino); festivals -Sarakiki/Hadang festival is a grand street dance performance and exhibition depicting different rituals of participants from Calbayog and Samar, dancing to kuratsa!
